What is a Parochial Church Council?
Aim and Purpose
The prime responsibility of the PCC of Broadhembury is to cooperate with the Rector (or appointed substitute) in promoting the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical, within the Parish of St. Andrew as part of the Dunkeswell Mission Community.
The PCC is also specifically responsible for the care, maintenance, preservation and insurance of the fabric of St. Andrew’s Church as well as the goods and ornaments and for raising funds to enable those responsibilities to be carried out.
Objectives and Activities
Through our services and worship, we endeavour to put worship and faith into practise through prayer and scripture, sacrament and music. The PCC is committed to encouraging and enabling as
many people as possible to worship at our Church and to become part of our Church community. The PCC maintains an overview of worship and, with the guidance of our Priest in Charge (Rector from 7th September 2025), Reverend Nigel Candelent and Associate Priest, Reverend Jane Penn, aims to provide a range of services that satisfy the needs of all those in the Parish.
When planning our activities for the year, we consider the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on charities for the advancement of religion. We try to enable people to live out their faith as part of our Church Community through:
- Worship and prayer and learning about the Gospel to develop knowledge and trust in God.
- Provision of pastoral care for people living in the Parish through missionary and outreach care.
To facilitate some of this work, we must give due care and attention to our Church building and yard through prudent maintenance to the best of our ability and resources.
Achievements and Performance
Worship and Prayer
The PCC is keen to offer a range of services. However, with the clergy having to cover 6 parishes across the Dunkeswell Mission Community, even with retired clergy and lay support, Broadhembury were only able to offer 3 services per month. The schedule consists of a service of Morning Praise on the 1st Sunday at 11 am, a service of Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) on the 3rd Sunday at 9.30 am and a service of Holy Communion (Common Worship) on the 4th Sunday at 11 am. These were supplemented by some special services, and worship was always available to those able and willing to travel around the Mission Community. It is hoped that the schedule will be changed in 2026 to enable all services to be at 11 am.
